Richard, I have run the Cadillac mufflers that you spoke of behind a 350 engine in one of my '55 Chevys many years ago. This is what a muffler shop also told me about trying to quiet it down as well.
I know what you mean, My last motor simular to your setup with full headers was loud, my new setup 414sbc with Sandersn Block huggers I used 2 1/2 pipe with a crossover, Flow master Big Block mufflers (70 series) and currently it only goes to the back axle, it is much quieter but I think I am going to throw a set of resonators or another set of mufflers to really tone it down. The truck sounds good but I would like to get even quieter for the sake of being stealthy. I have been reading about an old 4 muffler set-up with caddilac mufflers, but am sure that, with modern mufflers,a queit system can be built. At the time I have a little over 400 HP(350ci)and run 1 3/4 shorty headers from sanderson,2.5 inch pipe with a home made x-pipe.The mufflers(large body dynomax) are just in front of the rear axle. The tail pipes are 2.5 inch and run about 2 inches past the roll pan, with baffeled DTM style ,oval tips. I would really like to here your ideas on the subject. I have changed my exhaust system a few times trying to get a nice quiet ride and not lose too much performance. You don’t have to buy a super expensive muffler for your generator, just a budget muffler, which cost only ten or twenty bucks, would do the job. And a good muffler can reduce this noise even lower.
Quietness: This is the main reason that everyone would install a muffler to a generator.A muffler that makes the exhaust process faster also makes the process of fuel consumption faster, so the engine can go faster, adding more power to your generator. Output flow: The output flow should be consistent and reliable in order to maintain a consistent performance of the engine.
The inlet size: First and foremost, the muffler’s inlet has to fit your generator exhaust outlet, or you’ll need to purchase a separate adapter to connect them. When it comes to mufflers for generators, here are some priorities that you can consult:
